Alex Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal on Sunday, April 6th, against the New York Islanders, officially passing Gretzky’s legendary mark and becoming the greatest goal scorer in league history. And fittingly, it came from the top of the left circle, the same spot where he’s been scoring goals from for 20 years.
“We all knew he had to score 42 to break the record [at the start of the season],” said center Dylan Strome. “We all knew the number. And to break a leg and come back and do what he did, I’m speechless.”
Gretzky reached 894 goals in 1,487 games. Ovechkin did it in 1,486, one game faster than “The Great One.” Both players hit the milestone in their 20th NHL season. While Gretzky’s journey included stops with the Oilers, Kings, Blues, and Rangers, Ovechkin has done it all with one franchise, the Washington Capitals.
Longtime Capitals broadcaster Joe Beninati made the moments even more special with two unforgettable goal calls for the tying goal at home and the record-breaking goal in Long Island.
“Here’s a pass, Ovechkin, SCORES! The Great Eight stands side by side with The Great One,” Beninati shouted as Ovechkin tied the record. And just the next day: “Cross-ice to Ovechkin… fires, SCORES! The chasing days are done. Alex Ovechkin is the greatest goal scorer in the history of the NHL.”
Ovechkin, who is known for his passionate goal celebrations, did not disappoint as he celebrated like it was his first goal. This iconic goal will forever be remembered by his iconic celebration, sliding on his torso, skates in the air, heading towards center ice.
Just five years ago, this moment felt nearly impossible. Goal-scoring in today’s NHL is tougher than ever, and Ovechkin was well into his 30s. But year after year, he defied time with consistency that has never been seen before. Fourteen seasons of 40+ goals, unmatched durability, and a shot that goaltenders have not been able to figure out have made it possible.
Ovechkin didn’t just chase Gretzky, he caught him. And now, he stands alone.
